SANTA MONICA BEACH - The Beach Boys band was formed in 1961, by the Wilson brothers, Brian, Dennis, and Carl 50 years ago.
The band also included Wilson cousin Mike Love, whose real name was Mike Hunt but he changed it for the obvious reason, and their good friend Al Jardine whose real name was Alfredo de La Sardine.
Together the band had lots and lots of hits including songs such as "Surfin' Safari," "Surfin' USA," "Surfer Girl," "Surfin' Bitches of Redondo Beach," "Surf This!" and one of their biggest hits "I Got Your Surfboard In My Swim Trunks."
The band was noted back in the 60s and 70s for being the only band to perform at their concerts wearing bathing suits.
Once while the Beach Boys were performing in Bangkok, Thailand they were arrested by Thai authorities for violating the country's strict dress code law which prohibits individuals from displaying their knees in public.
During the early years the band actually traveled with an 18-wheeler filled with 8 tons of beach sand which was spread out on the stage. They also incorporated a flock of 37 trained seagulls, six, ten foot tall palm trees, and a 500 gallon fish tank that held a hammerhead shark.
Band spokesperson Brian Wilson who is 68, said that he and Mike Love, 70, and Al Jardine, 68, have signed on with SiPi Productions which is owned by Simon Cowell and Piers Morgan.
Brian said that they will be performing as The Beach Grandpa's and will be starting their 29-city Son-of-A-Beach Concert Tour on Friday, June 24, 2011, which is National Fly A Kite Day except in Rhode Island where kites were outlawed in 1955.
Brian Wilson said that part of the concert tour proceeds will be donated to The Gary Busey Home For Old Retired Confused Musicians
