Bob Geldof has announced that the Boomtown Rats are to reissue their classic track 'Banana Republic' in order to cash in on the banana craze currently sweeping satirical website theSpoof.com
"What these people are doing with bananas is amazing," Geldof told us. "We'd be crazy not to ride the wave of free publicity. And anyway, so what if the song is crap? It's about bananas and a banana republic, so that's what really counts."
Bananas have hit the headlines in the past, such as when an EU directive recommended that European member states import only straight bananas.
And when Monica Lewinsky described a certain ex-US President's "love length" as being bendy like a banana.
Or a bendy bus.
Banana skins have long been associated with comedic endeavour, with Hollywood stars such as Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton slipping on Banana skins with frquently hilarious results.
The market value of banana giants Fyffes increased by 7% overnight.
