David Letterman said he and long long long longtime girlfriend Regina Lasko had a bumpy trip to matrimony last week, last year, last 23 years in fact.
During a taping Monday of CBS' "Late Show," Letterman said he and Lasko married March 19 at the Teton County Courthouse in Choteau, Montana, but only after their truck got stuck on a muddy road.
"You get stuck on a muddy road in Montana, what else is there to do?"
Letterman and Lasko, whose son, Harry, was born in November 2003, didn't take an immediate honeymoon even though Choteau, Montana is known as the "Unofficial Honeymoon Capitol of This Section of Montana, Really I'm Not Kidding!"
The late-night host was back at work in New York on Monday to deliver the news - and a few jokes about the marriage, which he paid for dearly or at least, friends say he walked funny yesterday.
"Regina and I began dating in February of 1986, and I said, 'Well, things are going pretty good, let's just see what happens in about 20 years,'" Letterman, who turns 62 next month, said at the taping, according to a transcript.
"Then the brat arrived and now, before I become a grandfather, I'm making an honest grandmother of her."
Rumor around Hollywood at the time of Harry's birth was that Letterman wanted to name him, "Cliffy Letterman".
Letterman concluded, "As long as the Viagra company doesn't go under, we'll be fine and I don't think those old congressional farts will let that happen."
