Oscar-winning director Spike Lee's grandmother is set to be investigated for social security fraud after the startling revelation that she defrauded the US Government for 50 years.
Lee, declared on live television, during his acceptance speech, that she (his grandmother) "saved 50 years of Social Security checks to put her first grandchild — she called me Spikie-poo — she put me through Morehouse College and NYU grad film. NYU!"
The admission caused outrage amongst hard-working tax-payers, who, it now seemed, funded Lee's education and ultimate success. Many angered by this took to Twitter, with one furious taxpayer asking "if she didn't need this money to live, then why was she claiming it?" Another wrote - "Typical, hard-working middle-class Americans paid for this man's education and film school - yet he hates us. Is she gonna pay back her checks? Such hypocrisy."
However, some did come to Lee's defense, with one commentator stating "Well, it took 50 years to admit this crime but at least Spike 'did the right thing'...eventually..."
