Chrysler Corp has recalled the entire 2000-2010 production output of Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Caravan vehicles due to reports that a small percentage actually have working brake lamps.
A spokesman at the NTSB stated that he was aware of at least 5 reports of vehicles with fully functional brake lamps. Owners were assured that there is no risk of being pulled over by police.
Factory workers apparently failed to install burned out bulbs or improperly connect wiring assemblies to ensure non-working lamps, as part of the approved assembly line practices. Training procedures were not in place at all production plants to ensure compliance.
Chrysler is asking all owners to bring their vehicle to a dealer for an inspection and possible removal of a working bulb. Repairs should be accomplished within 3-4 hours.
Dodge Caravan owners are asked politely by Chrylser not to bring up complaints about oil-burning engines or crappy paint quality while at the dealership for the recall work.
