In high school, my daughters both worked for a local grocery chain, Tops. The chain was billed as "Friendly", so all employees were trained to be smiling and friendly at all times.
One day, when my oldest daughter was checking out at a customer during a very busy period, the cash register began having problems. First it ran out of paper, then the scanner malfunctioned, and finally when she went to open a roll of coins, it burst open, spilling coins everywhere. The customer was noticeably upset at the wait, etc. and seemed almost fit to be tied.
However, my daughter kept her composure, and when all was back under control, she apologized to the customer, and informed her of her total, which came to exactly $22.00. Trying to soothe the customer's nerves, and smooth things over, she said to her with a smile, "That's a nice round figure."
Still frazzled, the woman glared at her and said, "Well, you're no bean pole yourself, honey."
