This morning a woman rang our doorbell, offering our "family" a Bible and clearly wanting to share with me her "faith journey," hoping, no doubt, that I would join her.
I then explained to her that we already had at least a half dozen Bibles in our family, including the King James Version, The Revised Standard Version, the NIV, the New American Bible, the Jerusalem Bible, etc. I also told her that our family had multiple copies of the Bhagavad Gita, the Tao Te Ching, and the Upanishads, and I offered her copies of these.
She look at me perplexed, as if she had never heard of these well-known sacred texts, and said, "No. I'm not interested."
I told her that I wasn't interested either. And I added that someone who seemed to know so little about religion really had no business talking to people about the subject. I also offered to make her a list of readings on her subject to better prepare her for her job.
Somehow, I don't think she will be coming back.
