I bet that the term "no use beating a dead horse" came about after several attempts by native Americans to improve on one of their healing ceremonies.

Chief Iron Board: "For tonight's ceremony, we have Slow Eagle or flute, Buffalo Stepped On Foot on gourds and Smelly Hands on dead horse."
