Explorers in an uncharted part of Africa came upon a large water filled crack in the earth. It extended as far as they could see in either direction. It was too far across to swim carrying their equipment and too deep to wade. They feared that they were stymied. Then they decided to collect fallen tree branches and bind them together.
They did and floated across on their rift raft.
