London - The mystery of TV girl's unsolved killing took another bizarre twist this week.
Private eye Jonathan Rees' acquittal of the 1987 axe murder of former business partner Daniel Morgan threw up tantalising details of his corrupt empire.
The court heard how the investigator had 'procured a police source so that he could sell live details of the investigation' within hours of Dando's shooting.
There was no comment about Dando's phone being bugged 'before her April 1999 doorstep shooting' that eventually saw Barry George freed on Appeal from a prison life sentence.
Rees had been described in court as 'running an empire of tabloid corruption' linked to Andy Coulson's News of the Screws.
Lawyers said Red Tops had paid him a reported £150,000 a year for dubiously-sourced celebrity tips.
The Morgan murder charge against him collapsed, however, after CPS lawyers failed to present any substantive evidence in the UK's longest running criminal case.
The showdown came as police sources admitted they'd suddenly found 'four boxes of evidence' not previously available to the prosecution.
Media reports had previously commented that Rees was caught in a police sting 'paying bribes to various serving officers'.
They bugged his office and hunted down the vast contact book of corrupt people who regularly fed him juicy tidbits.
"There is no evidence that any of Miss Dando's Crimebotch officers was bent," a New Scotland Yard statement advised today.
A new investigation of both homicides is now ongoing.
