Today at 8pm (UK time), houses, offices and other buildings across the world will switch off their lights for one hour for Earth Hour. The event is intended to highlight the evils of electricity, and is sponsored by the Amish community and the Blind Association.
In Australia, the event has not received much interest, since the event will occur during daytime anyway.
In the UK, power companies are expecting a massive surge during the event, as people boil their kettles repeatedly to make tea throughout the stressful hour.
Organisers of the event have suggested that people switch off their TVs as well as their lights, although this is widely predicted to be ignored.
