Mainstream conservative and Pragmatist factions in Iran have passed a joint bill today, requiring a timetable for the release of British sailors, in direct defiance of President Ahmadinejad.
"The President's policies are not working," said Supreme Leader Khamanei, "We need to get out of this horrible situation and find a new way forward. This policy of escalation must end."
Ahmadinejad implored his countrymen to reconsider their position at an anti-west rally in Tehran.
"Surely, it is true that our posturing has gotten us nothing but worldwide criticism and economic ruin, but failure in Iraq's territorial waters would be even more catastrophic. Shouldn't we give international brinksmanship one last chance to succeed?"
President Ahmadinejad has promised to veto any bill that in any way implemented or suggested a timetable for the sailors' release.
