Abbé Pierre was a lifelong friend and advocate for the poor and homeless in France for more than half a century. "Thank God he's dead!" was the general exclamation around the country as political leaders and religious authorities gathered to pay him homage.
Jacque Chirac, French President concurred: "This guy was a royal pain in the ass. Everytime you turned around, there he was with his hand out. He never seemed to get it! If we really cared about the poor and the homeless we would stop wasting money on war and graft but we don't care and never will. Good riddance! Now we can honor him since we're finally free of that nagging conscience."
As French Cardinals donned their liturgical finery, each agreed Abbé Pierre is a saint: "And good thing, one robust hierarch added, GB Shaw was right when he wrote in St Joan that prophets are problems but when they die and we are rid of them we make them saints. Saints are safe..."
