SANAA, Yemen--President Saleh, who's been dealing with Occupy Wall Street protesters since before they were called that, decided two days ago to have his troops open fire on protesters in hopes of putting an end to the silliness.
Calling for the president's resignation, protesters have been getting rowdier and rowdier in the capital. In particular, security forces targeted protesters who were marching toward the presidential palace. According to reports, between 14 and 16 people have been killed and some 80 have been wounded.
Evidently, Yemeni citizens don't hold liars in high regard. As long ago as April 23, Mr. Saleh stated that he would stand down within the coming weeks. Six months later, it appears that he has reneged on that promise.
Said one Yemeni government official in defense of the shooting: "Let's see the U.S. put up with street protests for eight months as we have. They'll start shooting citizens, too."
