LAS CRUCES, New Mexico - Random chia pet sculptures have been mysteriously popping up at a local doggy park and, until now, no one knew how or why they were growing. Cute little sculptures of everything from Tweety Bird to SpongeBob SquarePants chia sculptures have been sprouting up seemingly on their own.
But one family, owners of a cute little mutt named Abbie Gayle, aka Psycho Puppy, are pretty sure they know what it is that's making the chia pets pop up all over their dog's favorite playground, because they are also finding chia pet sculptures in their own back yard.
About a month or so ago, Abbie Gayle's owners went shopping at their local Farmer's Market and came across a display of one-pound bags of chia seeds. The display claimed that chia seeds are a a great source of omega 3 fatty acids, so the family decided to pick up a bag of this new wonder food. They brought the chia seeds home and stored them in the pantry with the rest of the foodstuffs and thought nothing else of it.
A few days later, they remembered they bought the chia seeds and went into the pantry to get the bag to mix some into their smoothies for breakfast. They found the seed bag opened on the pantry floor and their poor Abbie Gayle lying beside it quite bloated. They swore they could almost see a green gas cloud in the pantry and the entire area stunk to high heavens with just a hint of mint flavoring.
They knew they had to do something quick, so they called the vet, who advised them to take Abbie Gayle to the doggie park immediately as she would be having several bowel movements within the hour. They did as they were told, and sure enough almost as soon as Psycho Puppy got to the park, she jumped out of the car and hit the ground running toward her favorite dumping spots. Her owners estimate she went about 5 or 6 times before finally looking well enough to get back into the car and go home.
And now, a little over a month later, chia pet sculptures are dotting the doggie park landscape. The sculptures won't last for long, but for the time being, the place reminds one of a miniature Disney World all thanks to Abbie Gayle and her late-night raid on the pantry.
