A Southern Baptist group has successfully challenged educational materials in the Alabama school system, demanding the removal of all suggestions that caterpillars and butterflies are the same creatures.
Members of the scientific community have expressed concern, claiming that there is irrefutable imperical evidence of the the existence of metamorphosis, a biological process through which caterpillars transform into butterflies and moths.
Reverend Howard Lynch decries the scientific community's descriptions of metamorphosis as being "an affront to God", and has spearheaded the campaign to alter school books to include the alternative view promoted by Christian fundamentalist groups that caterpillars and butterflies are two different examples of God's creation.
