The NY Times has published an expose' on the NYPD and their G-U-N-S. Some interesting statistics from the boys in blue and their blunderbusses: NYPD blasts their weapons far less than they did ten years ago under fascist dictator Guiliani.
When the Big Apple Armed and Dangerous do shoot often there is no one firing back. They're "hit-ratio"(NYPD jargon) was about 34% of the time. LAPD had a 27% hit ratio during the same period. Sometimes those targets are dogs.
Unintentional firings include wrestling, weapon cleaning, holster leaning and even placing revolvers in ovens for safe keeping. Some accuse the NYPD of inflating their hit ratio by including 74 officer suicide attempts by gun which are averaging 100% accuracy.
89% of the targets in NYC were black or Hispanic. Police ballistics experts suggest that the darker colors make easier targets. When asked if that is also true of the above average number of night time shootings, experts pointed out the bright lights of the big city.
