WASHINGTON -- President George Bush today announced he had signed the McCarthy Patriot Act to honor whom he terms "a true American hero."
"I've always loved that guy and the values he brought to America," said the President in a special meeting with reporters. "This is just my way of showing McCarthy my deep respect and honor. He was a true Christian diplomat."
Shocked when hearing of the proclamation, reporters carefully asked the president why he chose the late senator, Joseph R. McCarthy, as a national hero when the senator so obviously ruined countless lives with his anti-communist witch hunts.
"Huh?" said Bush. "I'm talking about Charlie McCarthy…you know, Edgar Bergen's son. However, old Joe gave us some fine values, too!"
Candice Bergen declined to comment but sources close to the actress say she is planning to attend the official ceremony honoring her late brother.
