Department of Health officials have set up a five mile exclusion zone around a farm in Somerset after thousands of sardines were found in a 1973 Morris Marina coupe.
55 year old Norbert Mathieson, who has lived all is life in East Coker, a village just outside Yeovil, contacted his local environmental health inspector after noticing an increasingly bad odour emanating from an abandoned farm next door.
When a Department of Health team investigated, they found that a car full of dead sardines was the cause of the obnoxious smell.
Everton Weeks, DOH spokesman speculated on the find :
"We can only assume that the owner of the offending car ran out of pine tree air fresheners and used the only thing that was at hand. If the gentleman had been a strawberry lover, there wouldn't have been an issue".
