The Conservative Party has been rocked by allegations over a Gloucester councillor and former mayor's private life.
A report in a major national newspaper today will claim that Brian Bickersthwaite, a councillor in Tewkesbury is also a fully paid up, card carrying member of the Timmi Mallett Appreciation Society.
While this in itself has not yet been designated a criminal act, serious doubt must be cast upon the credibility of any public official who admits to such tendencies.
While Mr Bickersthwaite claims to have disclosed his membership to his council colleagues, he never actually expanded on the level of his involvement in the society. Far from being merely a passive Mallettite, the councillor is on the national council that not only organises the annual conference in Bournemouth but also arranges members trips to Mallett's birthplace in Somerset and the scene of his legendary first public appearance in the Nag's Head, Gravesend.
The Tewkesbury Conservative Branch have called an urgent meeting this morning to discuss Mr Bickerstwaite's future.
It will be no great surprise, however, if the councillor's political career will be terminated sooner rather than later.
