Mystery surrounds Gordon Brown's early trip to B & Q this morning. Mr Brown left before 8am. returning with hammer, nails and a bundle of planks.

Observers say that for the next hour banging and swearing was heard from inside the premises and No.10 workers arriving just after 9am. found they could not gain access.

Mr Brown has been talking to members of his security and office staff through the letter box.

When reporters asked members of Mr Brown's staff to clarify the situation, an unnamed security officer said "We don't really know. Gordon is not really communicating. He just keeps shouting "Go away." through the letterbox."
