A ban on caterwauling has come into force across the UK. Legislation placing the ghastly cat scream and other related noises in the Class B category alongside barking and dolphin clicking was rushed through Parliament.
The government's noise pollution advisers - the Advisory Council for the Misuse of Noise (ACMN) - found evidence the sounds were "likely to be harmful to fat idiots".
Making such noise now carries a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment, while regular caterwaulers could receive up to 14 years. The Association of Chief Police Officers says it has "no intention" of "criminalising" young people caught caterwauling, also known as "pussy-whistling" or "meow meow".
Police say they will focus on persistent caterwaulers and ahead of the ban, a number of internet sites selling the so-called legal scream were closed down.
But Spoof News home affairs correspondent, Fanny Pillbox says one online supplier has claimed to be liaising with the world's "leading audio engineers" to develop replacement sounds.
And the ACMN, in its report to the government, said an illegal market in cat calls could develop as users stockpiled CD's before the ban.
We tried contacting the ACMN ourselves, but directory inquiries had never heard of them.
