It's a tragic day for Britain. Rainfall on an unprecedented scale hammered the north of England today, with the Cumbrian towns of Cockermouth and Workington bearing the brunt of nature's fury.
The greatest tragedy involved Police Constable Bill Barker, a father of four who was tragically swept to his death as he tried to turn traffic away from the Northside Bridge in Workington, Cumbria.
The bridge collapsed, taking Constable Barker with it. His body was recovered later on a coastal beach.
Our thoughts go out to PC Barker's family, and to all who have been devastated by rising water levels.
Fortunately, the Met Office were quick to reassure us that this kind of event will only occur once in a thousand years.
Which is really comforting to know.
RIP PC Bill Barker. From all at the Spoof.
