West Berkshire Council today ran out of road salt for the roads around Newbury, and resorted to a novel solution - vehicles fitted with tyres made solely from bacon.
'The bacon ploughs have been designed to get through the toughest conditions,' said lead councillor for roads and meat derivatives Cllr Charlie Farnsbarns. 'We have found that the saltiness of the bacon dissolved snow and ice on contact, and leaves pink piggy scented streaks throughout the country, which will boost morale amongst our citizens.'
Local residents have long pressed for Council vehicles to run on tyres made from salty items, but it was thought that after a multi-million pound failed experiment with salted cashew nut-tyred unicycles that the plans had been stopped.
