Chelsea FC last night took positive steps to help cash-strapped supporters with a phenomenal gesture of goodwill in the run up to what looks like being a harsh festive period for many.
At last night's CL clash with CFR Cluj the club gave every supporter attending a free blue and white scarf, a move which prompted many to rise to their feet and wave the scarves about with wild abandon, whilst reducing others to tears.
Chelsea supporting twins Reg and Ronnie Kay of Bethnal Green, who each paid £55 for a match ticket were delighted by the club's generous gesture.
'It's very thoughtful of them,' said one, although we weren't sure which one it was. 'If we wear these around the house we might be able to turn the central heating down by a degree.'
'Yeah,' agreed the other. 'And that'll help with the global warming carbon footprint thingy. So Chelsea are in effect saving the world.'
A Chelsea marketing man told us:
'We wanted to give the fans something really useful for Christmas so we ordered a job lot of these scarves from China. They only cost us 21p each. But it's the thought that counts.'
More as we get it.
