Normally, on reaching a diamond wedding anniversary, one receives a card of congratulations from HM the Queen. These ornately figured, tastefully drawn cards designed by court calligrapher, Humphrey Smullet, cost around £4:45 each and yet an autograph hunter can pick one up on ebay for £100.
One of the guards on duty outside Buckingham Palace told In Seine news that the Queen is said to be 'not amused' at having to send herself and her loving Greek husband one as it has been quite a difficult 60 years and the Royal Doctor, Sir Gerry, has advised her not to, for fear it could bring on one of her 'Annus Horriblises'(sic)..
She has taken the doctor's advice and saved the government £5 (£4:45 for the card; 36p for 1st class stamp; and 19p for envelope from Viking Direct)
The HM Treasury is said to be delighted and will no doubt find something useful to waste it on.
