LONDON (Heewack News Network) -- Doctors said they are unable to save the foot of Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, who was injured in last week's 0-0 draw with Reading. Team officials said Rooney may have to be "put down" this week.
"We have tried to save young Rooney's foot but have been unable to do so," said a tearful Sir Alex Ferguson, the team's manager. "In my opinion, we have no choice but to have him humanely destroyed so as to end his suffering."
Rooney, who scored 23 goals for the Red Devils last season, suffered the injury late in the first half when defender Michael Duberry trod on him in the Reading penalty area. It was, to that point, Manchester United's best chance at scoring.
Rooney attempted to resume play but was limping noticeably, then dropped to the ground, unable to compete further momentarily. "I knew it was bad," said long-time Man U. supporter Edward Bay-Window, 33. "I told my mates, 'this one looks fatal.'"
Following a respite on the sidelines, Rooney returned to action. But at the start of the second half, the young striker was nowhere to be seen and in fact has not been seen since.
Manchester United officials heatedly denied that Rooney had already been put down, but refused to produce a body as proof.
Rooney's death would be good news for newly acquired Carlos Tevez, on loan from West Ham United, who expects to see considerable playing time in the next few weeks.
"I feel bad for Wayne, but I'm thrilled for the opportunity," said the Argentine striker. "Last year at West Ham we had to put down three defenders, four midfielders and a couple of keepers. It's just part of the game."
