Could the training of chimpanzees to answer phones, with a better grasp of the English language, be the answer?

Brum, Land of the Brummies: Exasperated Brummies have been left with long waits and repeatedly been transferred to wrong Departments because the strong Brummie accent has baffled the voice recognition software.

The Brummie twang causes the machine problems and last year a new phone app was created to help people understand the thick accent. The IBrummie phone app translates sayings from the Brummie twang into the 'Queen's English' and says them out loud.

However, Birmingham City Council's computerised phone system has gone into 'meltdown', because it doesn'y do IBrummie.

Many people have sympathy with the automated answering service, as they also find it difficult to understand the Brummie accent! One person recalled being asked if I'd like a "kipper tie" in at Birmingham City Council once and replied, that they didn't think they needed one, until their IBrummie phone app translated it as a 'cuppa'!
