Champion greyhound trainer Wally Devon, 57, from Cornwall defied nature last night when he actually won the Invitational event at a top race meeting. The annual event is an invitation to 24 of the Country's best greyhound racers, the best 6 dogs race for the winner take all prize in the final race of the night.
Fans who watched events unfold were stunned by what they had seen.
Noel, a greyhound fanatic from Norwich takes up the story, 'I'd been watching Wally at trackside sorting the starting rabbit out, putting it through it's paces and jogging alongside it but for some reason when the traps opened he just kept running. It was brilliant for the crowd, we thought he was a pacemaker. '
Wally carries on the story, 'After a lap I did think about pulling up, I'd done my bit but the sound of the crowd really fired me up and I thought to myself, Wally lad, you could win this. As I came round the final bend I could feel the dogs closing in but I've managed a dip for the line and won it on a photo finish. Incredible really. '
Organiser Barry Island said 'I don't think we'll see that again. '
