X-treme sports seem to be all the rage in the new millennium and the aircraft community is jumping on the bandwagon. Sunday, at Los Angeles International Airport, runway 3 West will be the site of the first annual "Aircraft Demolition Derby."
Participants will taxi and fly their airplanes into each other until only one plane is left flying. This is the same principle as the automobile demolition-derby only with aircraft.
Safety is a big issue and each contestant will be required to have a parachute and fire suit. Planes will only have enough fuel to run their engines for 15 minutes, this to lower the possibility of huge flaming explosions; although promoters are expecting some very big fireworks from this event.
Tickets to attend the Derby are currently on sale at TicketMaster and TicketTime outlets for $25 per person, grandstand and festival seating only. Tickets will be available at the gate for $30 per person. All people are encouraged to bring their own protective clothing and fire extinguishers.
