Flushing Meadows - (Rioters): "Am I feeling confident of winning my fourth consecutive US Open? You betcha!" Roger Federer beamed today as American bookies cuts the odds of him winning to 1-3, assuming that second seed Nadal won't turn chicken and fail to take on the champ.
Federer looks supremely poised to produce a career best masterclass in wiping the floor with the very best of opposition talent despite plucky noises from Ozzie challenger Leighton Hewitt, Serbia's Novak Djokovic - ranked Number 3 for Tournamet purposes and Number 5 seed Andy Roddick.
Federer and Nadal last slugged it out at the Wimbledon championships in June this year when a five set thriller confirmed that the Swiss-born champ is defiant on his storming path to exceeding the awesome tennis legend that is Pete Sampras.
"Sure I'm gonna better the Sampras record," Federer said today "That's the only sporting record actually worth taking on and has always been my lifetime's ambition.
"And my message to those stalwart American challengers like Roddick, Blake and others?
"How about golf! Hahaha! Seriously though, Andy's well past his sell by already and there isn't a US home grown of any caliber that I can serious consider any kind of threat.
"And as for Nadal, well sure he's good. He has to be! But he's a long, long way off the mark if he thinks I likely to give in so much as an inch and let him steal my thunder.
"So take up those odds of a Federer-Nadal final if you want: 6/4 looks like pretty good odds if you ask me.
"But don't back the Spaniard because there ain't a hope in hell I'll be letting him take over the crown while I'm on this massive roll!"
