Ex Liverpool defender Tommy Smith has been arrested by Police after and charged with selling scrap metal to an auction house.
Smith who broke many ankles in his long career for Liverpool was believed to have made more than £137,000 in the deal.
The scrap metal was believed to have been taken over a period of years from as far as Europe and had been sold in small batches so as not to arouse suspicion.
Police said Smith was caught by his own self confidence in himself by openly dealing with his contacts while many representatives of the media were in the vicinity.
He was caught on camera smiling while large sums of money were being discussed. Smith said he was innocent and denies all charges.
I will be talking to my solicitor the moment he gets released from Liverpool jail.
