Life Without Youth

Funny story written by walter

When health or wealth is threatened, we get fearful just like a fish in a tank after hearing a sudden knock on the container. This reaction is called fear. Fear, in most living things, is said to be basic or innate. A sudden change of environment such as light, sound etc causes fear in us. Additionally, we have a tendency to be afraid of the unknown. Naturally, the econ-political changes of the present time constantly threaten our survival, causing fear. Moreover, when we are put in an unpredictable situation we become very apprehensive.

Since fear is said to be innate, then all living things must somehow experience it, including despots, thieves, murderers and the like. Of course, those who practice a cult are not afraid to get killed, but the reason behind all this is a greater fear, fear of being barred from entering a promised abode in paradise.

However, aside from that generality, we may observe strange behavior in people that we constantly meet. For instance, some educated people can show signs of fear when the name of a dictator or his associates is mentioned in private conversation. It seems the crueler the dictator, the greater is the fear felt by majority of the people. This majority has also chosen another way around to lessen its fear: to resort to some sort of bribery- servitude, offering cigars, sweet talk, buying dinner and so on. A woman consciously or unconsciously may allow the source of the threat to flirt with her or even to sleep with her.

In case of fear, animals, including man, have two choices: escape or hide. Migration, in most cases, is a common form of escaping the threat.

To protect ourselves against threats, we need to be prepared; therefore, we go to school or gem to learn a trade or grow muscles and eventually stay alive. Some people, on the other hand, dedicate their life to accumulate wealth as a safeguard against threats.

Some psychologists believe that fear of death turns people religious, and religion guarantees a life after death. To them religious practice is just like prepayments for a greater gain in future.

In point of fact, fear can be likened to our shadow: depending on the direction of light, it either follows or precedes us, but one day we have no shadow--death. The more we examine instances like this in our daily life, the more we see the presence of fear in various aspects of life. In this respect, fear is omniscient, and religions speak of an entity they worship that is omniscient, too!

Actually this omniscient factor, fear, is a means to safeguard living things against threats. Of, course, living things are strengthened by camouflage, tricks, deception etc. This belief can lead us to the importance of life which needs to be protected and not spared. Ironically, life is the property of a certain amount of minerals and organic substances suspended in a bucket of water.

When that bucket is overturned, life ends, too. However, there is an irony involved in this which is a mysterious quality called youth. Actually, life is not youth as life span of youth is much shorter that life itself. Youth is the flower; life is the plant. Is life without youth worth living?

The funny story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
