When David Gregory, host of NBC's Meet the Press, scheduled the Romney family for an interview to be shown next Sunday, no one expected any breaking news. It seems nothing can ever be taken for granted in the 24/7 news cycle. An advanced copy of the interview has surfaced. It shows that Gregory appeared somewhat bored as he began the interview with Romney's wife and five sons. He began with the oldest son, Taggert.
Gregory: "Taggert, I guess it must be quite a thrill to have your dad running for president?"
Taggert: "Well, it's not like it's the first time. You know, been there, done that. You know, same ole, same ole."
Gregory: "But he's the nominee this time. That must be a thrill?"
Taggert: "I guess one man's thrill is another man's chill."
Gregory looking a little annoyed and suspecting this interview wasn't going according to plan, asked, "Well let's cut to the chase,
Taggert. Are you endorsing him?"
Taggert: "I'll get back to you!"
Gregory turned to the second oldest son, Matthew: "Well Matthew, tell me, you must be enthusiastically endorsing your dad?"
Matthew: For what?"
Gregory: "For president!"
Matthew: "Oh, sure."
Gregory, now truly frustrated turned sharply to Joshua and snapped: "How about you Joshua? You have an endorsement for your father?"
Joshua: "Who else is running?"
David Gregory, one of the most experienced of the current journalists, now realized this interview was not going well. He turned to the last two sons and asked, "How about you guys? Endorsing your dad?"
Benjamin: "Sure, I guess so. He told us we could stay in the David Smith bedroom."
Craig: "Well," he paused, "I kind of thought Rick Santorum was cool." He paused again and added thoughtfully, "but you don't always get your first choice, you know?"
Gregory, now on the verge of losing his composure, turned to Ann Romney: "Ann, how about you?"
Ann Romney looked straight into the camera and said in a soft voice, "Honor and obey. Honor and obey. That's all I have to say!"
