Yesterday I said goodbye to the last class I will teach
Yes I've retired but stuck it out - put the bit between my teeth.
I started out in England in 1973
Three years of teachers' college there
Was more than enough for me.
My teaching job I did enjoy
Each little girl, each little boy
Some keen to learn, some keen to play.
I enjoyed each and every day.
And then I moved to Canada
Where I took a break
My heart was still in 'teaching'
So some courses I did take.
I'm glad I did come back again
To the job I dreamed about
But over the years it took its toll
And I'm glad to be getting 'out'.
I've just read the English 'dailies'
And read of pain and stress
There even is a hotline now
For teachers' who're depressed,
That's no surprise, I must confess
I took 2 years 'leave' because of stress
I returned last year to try again
Only to find still more 'pain'
Not from the children in my care
But 'changes here' and 'changes there'.
Teaching's changed, sad to say
Give me back the good old days.
