Terry and Penny were morose. Manchester United had just beaten West Ham 3-0. The Hammers had no points and were bottom of the league.

'I expected 6-0' said Penny 'so perhaps we should be relieved.'

'At times like these you have to remember that there are few winners and many losers.'

'But only one is last.'

'Our Sports master says losing is a test of character. It is important we all learn to lose and are able to cope with the disappointment.'

'How do you cope?'

'I think about anything else. Like you or the next football game I will be playing.'

'I like to do something, like gymnastics or putting the radio on loud so it annoys my Dad.'

'So you see what a benefit it is to live through harrowing times.'

'But some people have it much worse. They get accused of fixing matches and things like that.'

'Well that's cricket. The sport of gentleman. My Dad says they are always fixing things anyway.'

'Do you expect to be approached by anyone offering you cash to throw a match?'

'No. They will try and get you on things they can bet on and win, like getting a yellow card or even a red one. It is much harder to throw a match because it means the team, or most of it, have to get involved which makes it far riskier'.

'How about missing a penalty.'

'I would find it hard to miss a penalty.'

'That's just as well. I am glad to say the hand of corruption has not descended on gymnastics. Not yet, anyway.'

The story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
