Gareth Barry, the former Aston Villa midfielder who signed for Manchester City yesterday, has written a letter of apology to fans at his Villa Park, describing how he felt he had to move to Eastlands because of his need for an increased salary, but now, Villa fans have responded, telling Barry he is "a mercenary".

The writer of the letter, who signs it collectively, wrote:

"Dear Gareth,

we are so sorry to see you leave Villa. You have been a great servant to the club, which is only right, because we paid your wages.

Even when you showed traitorous signs last summer, when you spoke openly of wanting to leave Villa for Liverpool, we forgave you, and continued paying your already exorbitant salary, but you have shown scant regard for this, and have gone 'chasing the dollar', falsely claiming that you have done so to further your ambition, despite the fact that you WILL NOT be playing in Europe next season, something Villa players WILL be doing.

We at Viila Park will be able to chuckle behind our hands when you turn up next season playing for a team of hastily-assembled misfits, that will, no doubt, retain its lower position in the league, trailing in Villa's wake, during yet another season of hyped-up mediocrity.

With regard to your pay, you're not worth £80,000-a-week, let alone any more, and I, for one, will be glad to see you struggle in amongst Manchester City's 'almost-rans', whilst we kick on, and make steady progress under our best manager in modern times, Martin O'Neill.

You are a mercenary.

Good luck to you, pal. You're going to need it.
