Tommy the Musical

Perhaps I am being too over analytical about this. For those of you that remember the musical TOMMY the Who's musical, this is for you and to educate those if ever they see it.

Now, this is a rock musical about Tommy, a rich, deaf, mute, blind boy who becomes, somehow, someway, a pinball wizard that reaches Jesus like status. Now growing up I remember being freaked out by this movie. Number one,Elton John has very large shoes, Jack Nicholas attempts to sing, and Ann Margaret (although she never looked better than she did in this movie) is just plain odd. The father who is distant and such throughout the movie until the last half hour, is more of a child molester type than anything. Very creepy and greasy.

Ann plays the mother of this challenged child who is so tormented and bothered by her inability to reach her son, she turns to booze,as most do. She and her husband have a legal only marriage, again as most do. She tries everything, but all he does is play pinball. He is a natural, without being able to hear or see the ball he hits it with the greatest of ease and somehow becomes more famous than Elvis. He has hoards of fans. Meanwhile, his "parents" take him to every doctor and specialist they can find and come across Jack. Now jack attaches electrodes to his ears, eyes, and mouth, and flirts wildly with Ann all the while this is going on. Nothing happens, no sight, no sound, Ann does everything she can up to practically striping in front of her son to get him to see. She accidentally throws him through a large round mirror that lands him in a pool that seems to be the size of Ohio, suddenly he can see, hear and talk. What a miracle!

He then becomes more famous. making Ann and his father see the errors of their ways of the material world, booze and what not. He becomes a prophet of sorts. Begins with followers as if he were Manson with a compound and a "camp". He covers all followers eyes, ear's and mouth's and "teaches" them to play pinball by instinct. Replacing the holy cross with a giant T, with his parents now true believers and part of his "army". They speak to everyone letting them know that his face will be hanging in every house and all will follow. (During this period Ann rids herself of the hot clothes and sports a do rag and no make-up,a very big mistake! She and her husband seem to find peace with each other within the compound and the fact that their son has become more than a fixture within a room. He is literary on top of the world, building an entire camp of pinball homes within a camp and thousands of followers carrying a giant T.

Then, for what seems like no reason, suddenly, all the followers turn on him, smashing pinball machines and become a mob. A man pull a knife and kills his father, another takes a bottle and smashes it on Ann's head, killing her as well. the entire compound is in ruins and on fire within a second and you hear the sound of British sirens in the background. Tommy emerges from the chaos crushed by the death of his parents, two seconds later he is walking through the fire, never seeming to get burned and making his way to a long peer. he jumps in to a muddy river, then making his way to a beautiful waterfall, standing underneath it, basking as if it were a baptism. Then bone dry crawling through a creek. Suddenly a mountain appears and he is smiling and climbing to the very top and that is where it ends.

Now, I am all for metaphors and seeing the hidden meaning, I am also one of the biggest fans of musicals, but for the life of me I never understood this movie. I love the music, other than Jack singing and frankly Roger Daltrey's body is cut in this movie it made me want to cry, but I can't figure it out. Understood something's about it, but others, after twenty years still boggle my mind. if you haven't seen it, rent it and let me know what you think, if you have explain it to me! These are the things that keep me up at night. I'm sure it is just an artistic expression of The Who, but what the hell does it mean?...Goodnight Gracie
