Experience - or brains?

Funny story written by Bunts

Saturday, 5 May 2007

A friend of mine from a Secondary Modern school had built up a mass of experience in the trade, working his way up to Site Gaffer.

The company he worked for took on a Uni Grad in the office, but he was becoming too big for his boots.

The boss called the grad and my mate into an office and presented them both with identical site plans and asked them to draw up a tender for scaffolding.

Uni-man leapt at the plans with calculator and costing estimates, etc. The sec-mod bod spent five minutes looking at the plan.

The estimates were to include the cost of hiring extra scaffolding, wages, petrol costs and other overheads, and the profit margin.

Sec-mod-man put his answer into the bosses office within the hour. Uni-man put his answer in about lunch time next day. Both were very similar. But Uni-man lost his grandious air.

When my friend related this story to me, I asked him how he had managed. He winked, and explained it was experience. He had looked through the drawers of previous plans; taken one of similar size; then add 10% for error or inflation.

So. Do brains always beat experience?

The funny story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
