PJ Harvey is the early favourite to win the Mercury Prize 2011 with her album Let England Shake after the nominations were announced yesterday.

She will be up against - among others - Adele, who is currently enjoying massive success on both side of the Atlantic with her second album 21, and rap star Tinie Tempah.

Also in the running are Elbow with Build A Rocket Boys. Like PJ, they are previous winners - she won the award in 2001, Elbow in 2008.

But the nominations have been greeted with despair by noted rock critic Griswald Moog Doobie.

"Oh man! That's, like, so unbelievable man! No Stones? What about Jimi, man? What about the Floyd... the Doors?

"Who's Tinny Temper? Has he worked with Crosby, Stills and Nash?

"What's the Mercury Prize, man?"

The other nominees are Katy B, King Creosote and Jon Hopkins, Metronomy, Anna Calvi, Ghostpoet, James Blake, Everything Everything and Gwilym Simcock.

The funny story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
