He was relaxing and minding his own business when the photo went viral.
The bear has told friends he fails to see why it's such an oddity. "What's so interesting about seeing someone relax in a hammock?" he asks. A major hammock maker thought it was VERY interesting and has hired the bear to be featured in its next ad campaign. The employment contract specifies that the bear doesn't have to work during his hibernation period. "That's when I need to be snoozing in my own den, away from the pesky cameras," the bear stated.
He's excited to have the job. "Lying around in a hammock all day doesn't sound too strenuous," he said. A big plus is that he beat out Smokey the Bear for the job. Smokey has always felt quite superior, since he had a job preventing and fighting forest fires while his fellow bears were unemployed.
Now the hammock bear has the last laugh, pointing out, "I'll be working /relaxing in a hammock, while poor Smokey works his tail off in the forest. Yippee!"
