I started crying as I watched clips of voters pleading with me to win next month's crunch election. The thought of London returning to the kind of city I grew up in - where everyone had to watch every penny  to stay afloat.

If I lose to Tory Boris Johnson next month, I'll suffer a "guilt" that I'll will "carry to my grave".

"I grew up in that post-War Britain where it was a real struggle - and we are back in that world. The Tory mayor has no understanding of what it's like to be an ordinary person struggling to put a hot meal on the table every night of the week."
