On my very first cruise alone, after my first husband George had died, who should be the guest speaker but Sir Jimmy Savile, the man who raised millions of pounds for Stoke Mandeville hospital in order to build the National Spinal Injuries Unit.
He told us how Professor Ludwig Guttmann, a neurosurgeon, had come to Stoke Mandeville in 1944 and completely revolutionised the treatment and rehabilitation of injured servicemen.
