I've issued an appeal for party unity - as a poll revealed my so called rival Boris Johnson would make a far more popular leader.

I used a speech to a private Tory fundraising dinner to warn that voters always punished divided parties, and the Tory party 'must not go back to the bad old days'.

A bit weak I know, but I had to say something!
