The current economic crisis in Ireland has even spread to mythical beings. Ireland's leading leprechaun union, the ULI, have said they can no longer afford to leave pots of gold at the end of the rainbow. Instead, lucky people who reach the elusive rainbow's end will receive a voucher worth €10 to spend in any leprechaun shop throughout the Irish Republic. The shops sell green clothing, trinkets and potatoes.
To heap misery on the leprechaun industry, the Irish Government has partly blamed them for the current crisis. Irish president Paddy McCliche claimed that it is because of leprechaun's mischievousness and obsessive hoarding that led to shortages for ordinary non-magical folk. He even went as far as to compare it to the 1840s potato famine, when leprechauns promised a pot of potatoes at the end of the rainbow.
A ULI representative said, "Ye cannot be serious! They're just after me lucky charms."
