Three tunnels will be built underneath the Pacific Ocean. They will connect Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle to Hawaii.
Before this tunnel project came to light, visitors to Hawaii had to either take a boat or fly on an airplane. But now thanks to these new tunnels, they can drive there, too.
The tunnels will have underwater motels, gas stations and restaurants along their paths, a necessity for any long-distance traveller.
At approximately 2,000 miles each, the tunnels will be the longest in the world. Groundbreaking will take place in the summer of 2005, and the tunnels are expected to be completed within a ten-year timeframe. The Los Angeles tunnel will go first, followed by San Francisco and Seattle. In addition, three causeways over the Atlantic are considered for New York, Boston and Miami that would connect each city to Europe.
