Helmand Province, Afghanistan (New York Times) - A weekend boating accident on the Helmand River in which several Taliban fighters died has been blamed on the boat's captain, Yosef Hazelwood. Mr. Hazelwood was not from the area and lacked familiarity with inland nautical rules-of-the-road.
The boat capsized when a group of Royal and U.S. Air Force personnel on a Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) innertubing trip were attempting to cross paths. Although Mr. Hazelwood's vessel had the right-of-way, he apparently zigged when he should have zagged.
The aviators meanwhile sustained only minor injuries and are recovering nicely.
