Scott Peterson's Two Theories

Funny story written by Rebut

Tuesday, 21 September 2004

Scott Peterson on trial for murdering his pregnant wife provided the police with two theories, one within 24 hours of her disappearence, the other a week later. The theories were furnished to the court by Modesto police Detective Craig Grogan. Before we look at 'em we need to look at the time frame.

24 hours after the disappearence of a loved one is normally the signal for despair, rage, frustration, helplesness and the like. Theories on how they went missing is not high on the list of priorities, other than to think of places they might be.

Just give consideration to one of your nearest and dearest going walkabout. 24 hours without returning is a lifetime in that situation. You're hardly likely to be going : "Let's see now. Monica was going to meet Bill and she did take the dress he splashed out on and the cigar, so she must be at....."

You'd be going grey fast, trying to create a list of possible places they could be. "Let's see Swift, soup, Cambodia..." So it is in that light that we must look at these theories. Remember they do not in any way constitute proof of guilt but can lend credence to the "doubt". In terms of Scott's credibility they are neither here nor there. If they were from the lunatic fringe possibly but he was under great stress.

The first theory is that she was robbed in a park by a transient who wanted her grandmother's jewellery. The jewels were apparently very valuable which begs the question who goes walking in the park wearing the crown jewels?

The prosecution counter to this is that Laci Peterson was too weak from her pregnancy to be out walking. Lee Peterson has given the defense assistence by confirming that Laci did go on walks with them while on a recent trip.

Don't lose sight of the fact that Lee is Scott's dad and is paying for the defense. His eagerness to assist is beautifully illustrated when Grantski, Scott's stepfather-in-law and him had a little run in a few days ago. It nearly resulted in the family being ordered to sit at the back of the court. If my son sold fertiliser I'd pay to sit at the back of the court.

The second theory which Scott furnished to the police a week after Laci disappeared, is that she was kidnapped for the unborn child. This theory has of course been proven wrong.

Of course the fact that Scott was wrong on the second theory is very much in his favour. When people lie they usually exclude the impossible to avoid the entire theory being negated.

It's a whole mess of fertiliser and no doubting. Is he guilty? Hell I don't know, my gut says he is. Would I convict him? Not a chance there's a mountain of reasonable doubt which the state has failed to overcome. Ask me I'm a criminal defense lawyer and I'd be very angry to go down here.

The funny story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
