Alabama Senator Shelby is famous for his austere approach to goverment funding. So it was no surprise that the big three automakers didn't gain ayard against Republican Shelby's defense of the federal dollar.
Shelby explained his frugal refusal to save the industry and thousands of US jobs:
"Ah've lookt ta the eyes of stahvin' chillun and tolt 'em there'll be no free lunch in Alabama. I'se denied books, pencils and school breakfast programs without battin' my southern eye. Alabama is near da bottom in quality of life and close to numba 1 in teen pregnancy, poverty and non-existent healthcare. Did dose yankees think that this ole rebel would feed their greed when he has'n given a rebel's shit about real needy folk?"
