In a surprise response to Al Franken's decision earlier today, Tom Davis has announced his bid for Franken's seat on radio Air America. With his comedy career currently stalled, Davis seized on this opportunity to step into the shoes of his one time partner of the successful "Franken and Davis" comedy writing team of Saturday Night Live fame. In a field of contenders already crowded with political powerhouse satirists such as Janeane Garofolo and the guy who does the Bush impression on Mad TV, Davis faces an uphill battle for the Air America seat.

Franken, newly occupied with his efforts to unseat Minnesota Republican Senator Norm Coleman, could not be reached for comment, but another former SNL cast member offered his perspective on the Davis bid. Chevy Chase, in a hastily arranged press conference this afternoon, offered the following remark: "Davis is ready. He's paid his dues. He's waited in the wings. This is his time." Chase then fell off the stage and into the crowd only to pop up with an expectant smile on his face. Chase's behavior was apparently a parody of another political great - Henry Ford.
